Best Affordable Pillow for Side Sleepers: 5 Budget Picks That Still Give You Height
The best affordable pillow for side sleepers has to clear the same bar as an expensive one: Sleep Foundation says side sleepers usually need a pillow “at least 4 inches thick.” That bar matters because of how much time you spend there. In a study of 664 working adults wearing motion sensors, people spent 54.1% of their time in bed on their side. A cheap pillow that loses its height overnight isn't a bargain for those hours. I went through the budget band of our catalogue, read each listing and Amazon's summary of buyer reviews, and kept the five that state a usable height.
What an affordable pillow still has to do
A low price changes what you can expect from a pillow's cover, warranty and lifespan. It doesn't change what your neck needs. Cleveland Clinic says your pillow should be thick enough to support your head and neck “without letting it droop down,” and its rule of thumb is a neck kept “parallel to the mattress, rather than bent down or up” (Cleveland Clinic).
For a side sleeper, that means height first. Sleep Foundation's side-sleeper guide puts most side sleepers at 4 inches or more and says broad shoulders may need “over 6 inches.” It also warns that if you sink deeply into your mattress, “even a 4-inch loft is too high.” So when I sorted budget pillows, the first filter was simple: does the listing state a height, and is it in a range a side sleeper can use?
That filter removed a lot. Several low-priced pillows don't state a height at all, and slim budget pillows such as the Bluewave are too thin for many side sleepers below their 4-inch size. Every pick above states its height, and the shortest (the Utopia pair at 5 inches) still sits in the range most side sleepers start from. If you're not sure where you fall, our guide to what kind of pillow a side sleeper should use walks through height, firmness, shape and fill in order.
Affordable pillows: our 5 picks
#1 · Best affordable pillow overall
Sidney Sleep Adjustable Curved Pillow
It is one of the few budget-band pillows designed around side sleeping: the inner curve wraps your shoulder and the fill (75% foam, 25% polyester fiber) is adjustable from a listed 7 inches. Amazon's summary of buyer reviews describes it as a best choice for side sleepers, with the caveat that some find it too firm out of the box, which removing a little fill may help.
- Type
- Curved side-sleeper, adjustable fill
- Height
- 7 in listed; adjustable
- Fill
- 75% foam / 25% polyester fiber
- Price band
- Budget
#2 · Best affordable 2-pack
QUTOOL Cooling Shredded Memory Foam (2-pack)
Two adjustable shredded-foam pillows in one box, listed at 6 inches, with CertiPUR-US foam and a two-sided cover that has a cool-touch side. You get the adjustable fill Sleep Foundation suggests when you're unsure of your height without leaving the Budget band. Buyers report a strong smell when new, so plan to air them out.
- Type
- Adjustable shredded foam
- Height
- 6 in listed; adjustable
- Fill
- 85% cross-cut memory foam / 15% microfiber
- Price band
- Budget
#3 · Best affordable contour pillow for neck pain
Cozyplayer Ultra Pain Relief Cooling Cervical Pillow
A contoured memory foam pillow listed at 5.1 inches that you rotate 180 degrees to change the height, with a cooling case and a 100-night trial stated on the listing. Amazon's summary of buyer reviews highlights neck pain relief and value for money. It is smaller than a standard pillow (about 23 x 13 inches), and the listing allows a 0.5 to 1 inch measurement deviation.
- Type
- Contour cervical (memory foam)
- Height
- 5.1 in; height changes by rotating it
- Fill
- Memory foam
- Price band
- Budget
#4 · Best affordable fiber pair
Utopia Bedding Gusseted Pillow (2-pack)
Two gusseted fiber pillows listed at 5 inches, with OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certification. The gusset is a fabric side wall that keeps the edges from collapsing like a basic fiber pillow, which helps a side sleeper keep height near the shoulder. Buyers praise the value and how it fluffs up, while flattening is the main complaint.
- Type
- Gusseted fiber pillow
- Height
- 5 in listed
- Fill
- Fiber fill, "plush" (fiber type not stated)
- Price band
- Budget
#5 · Best affordable soft pillow
Beckham Hotel Collection (2-pack)
A two-pack of down-alternative pillows in cotton covers (the listing says 1,050g of hollow-fiber fill), listed at 8 inches and plush. That tall starting height is useful for a side sleeper who wants a softer feel, but it's not a structured support pillow: Amazon's summary of buyer reviews reports flattening over time and mixed views on support. The brand site lists a 30-night trial.
- Type
- Down alternative (gel fiber)
- Height
- 8 in (plush, listed)
- Fill
- Down alternative
- Price band
- Budget

How do the price bands work on this site?
You won't see a price anywhere on this page, on purpose. Amazon prices change often, and the live price appears beside each product when you click through. Instead, every pillow in our catalogue carries one of three bands: Budget, Mid-range or Premium, set from its price when we wrote the listing.
All five picks here are in the Budget band. For context, the most-discussed adjustable pillow, the Coop Original, sits in the Mid-range band, and Coop's softer Eden is Premium. What the extra money buys there is mostly paperwork and materials: the Coop brand site lists a 5-year warranty and a 100-night trial, and its foam carries both CertiPUR-US and GREENGUARD Gold. Our Coop Original review covers whether that's worth it.
One honest note on method: I compare listings, brand pages and Amazon's summary of buyer reviews. I don't physically test pillows, so where a claim comes from buyers rather than the listing, I say so.
Two-packs: where budget pillows actually save money
Three of the five picks come two to a box: QUTOOL, Utopia and Beckham. So does the Bedsure pair in the comparison table, and it is also sold in 4-packs. If you need pillows for two people, or want a spare for a guest bed, a pair gets you two pillows without leaving the Budget band.
There's a second, less obvious benefit for side sleepers. With two adjustable QUTOOL pillows, you can set one fuller and one thinner, then use whichever matches your mattress, or give the thinner one to a back-sleeping partner. Sleep Foundation suggests adjustable pillows if you're unsure of your loft, and a pair gives you two settings to compare.
The catch is lifespan. Sleep Foundation's replacement guidance lists polyester pillows among “the least durable,” at 6 months to 2 years, and down-alternative pillows at about 1 to 2 years, against 2 to 3 years for memory foam (Sleep Foundation). A cheap fiber pair you replace every year can cost more over three years than its sticker suggests, so compare lifespans, not just the box price.

Fiber vs shredded foam when money is tight
In the Budget band you're mostly choosing between two fills, and they fail in different ways.
Fiber pillows (Utopia, Beckham, Bedsure) are soft, light and easy to wash; Sleep Foundation says down-alternative and polyester pillows can be machine washed on a gentle cycle. Their weakness is the one side sleepers can least afford: they compress under the weight of your head and flatten over months. The Beckham's tall 8-inch listing and the Utopia's gussets give them more to start with, but buyers still report flattening for both.
Shredded foam (QUTOOL, Sidney Sleep) lets you tune the height and add fill back as it settles, which is why so many side-sleeper picks on this site use it. It's heavier, can smell at first, and the Sidney Sleep's mix of foam and fiber can feel firm until you remove some.
The Cozyplayer is the odd one out: a solid contour block. Flattening isn't among its buyer complaints, but you can't fine-tune it beyond rotating it, so it suits people who already know a roughly 5-inch contour fits. Our cervical pillow guide compares it with Mid-range contour pillows, and the neck pain guide explains when a contour shape is worth trying.
3 cheap ways to make any pillow fit better
Before spending more, a few changes cost little or nothing:
- Match the pillow to your mattress. Cleveland Clinic's Dr. Bang says a firmer mattress needs a thicker pillow and a topper or pillow-top needs a thinner one. If your affordable pillow feels too tall, the mattress may be the variable.
- Adjust before you judge. With QUTOOL or Sidney Sleep, take out a handful of fill at a time and re-check your neck in a mirror. Keep the removed fill in a bag in case you want it back.
- Add a pillow between your knees. Mayo Clinic suggests side sleepers with back pain draw the legs up slightly and put a pillow between them (Mayo Clinic). A spare budget pillow can do this job; our knee pillow guide covers shaped ones.
And look after what you buy: Sleep Foundation's care page says most pillows can be washed with warm water, a gentle cycle and mild detergent, but solid memory foam should not be machine washed, so check the care label first.
When is it worth leaving the Budget band?
Spending more makes sense in three cases. First, if you have broad shoulders and need well over 6 inches that won't sag, a Mid-range adjustable pillow with more fill, such as the DreamyBlue (listed at 8 inches with extra foam), is the safer bet. Second, if you want a long warranty and a home trial, the Coop Original's brand-site terms are hard to match in the Budget band. Third, if you've already been through two flattened fiber pillows, the lifespan math above tips toward foam.
Otherwise, the five picks here give a side sleeper usable height without stretching the budget. You can compare them with every other pillow on our side sleeper pillow shop page, see how adjustable fills differ in our adjustable pillow guide, or go back to our main guide to the best pillow for side sleepers to use the fit finder at the top. If you're drawn to the plush hotel style, read our Beckham Hotel Collection review before you buy.
Sukie's take
On a tight budget I'd put the money into fill that holds its height, not into a plush look. An adjustable shredded-foam pillow from the Budget band does more for a side sleeper's neck than a plush fiber pillow that buyers say flattens.
Affordable: common questions
What is the best affordable pillow for side sleepers?
For most people, I'd start with the Sidney Sleep Adjustable Curved Pillow: it's in the Budget band, listed at 7 inches with adjustable fill, and curved around the shoulder. If you need two pillows, the QUTOOL 2-pack is the better value, and for neck pain the Cozyplayer contour pillow is the budget cervical option.
Are cheap pillows bad for side sleepers?
Not automatically. The risk is height loss: Amazon's summary of buyer reviews reports flattening for several budget fiber pillows, and Sleep Foundation lists polyester as one of the least durable fills, replaced every 6 months to 2 years. A budget pillow with adjustable shredded foam at least lets you add fill back as it settles.
How thick should an affordable side sleeper pillow be?
The same as any side sleeper pillow. Sleep Foundation suggests at least 4 inches for most side sleepers and more than 6 for broad shoulders, while its neck-pain page gives 3 to 5 inches. Sinking deeply into a soft mattress lowers what you need. All five picks here list between 5 and 8 inches.
Why does my new shredded foam pillow smell?
Buyers of several shredded-foam pillows, including the QUTOOL and SUPA MODERN pairs, report a strong smell when new, and the theme also appears for pricier brands. The listings don't explain it. Airing the pillow out before use is the common approach; CertiPUR-US certification covers low VOC emissions, not zero emissions.
Is a 2-pack of pillows a good deal for one person?
It can be. A pair lets you set one adjustable pillow fuller and one thinner, keep a spare for a guest bed, or use the second between your knees. Just remember fiber pillows may need replacing sooner, so compare lifespan, not only the price per pillow.
